Irish scientists have tested coconut oil samples on streptococcus mutans. This is bacteria that glues to our teeth and causes dental erosion. For this reason coconut oil should be the main ingredient in toothpastes! Which is why it is one of our main ingredients in our toothpaste.
A research team from the Athlone Institute of Technology tested the antibacterial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion. The oils were tested against strains of Streptococcus bacteria. They found that enzyme-modified coconut oil strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria including Streptococcus mutans – a major cause of caries.

The group, who presented their work at the Society for General Microbiology's autumn conference at the University of Warwick, were prompted to investigate the effect of enzyme-modified foods on bacteria after many previous studies showed that partially digested foodstuffs are active against microorganisms.

Dr Damien Brady, the lead researcher, remarked: 'Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive altern-ative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations.' Coconut oil also kills the fungus Candida albicans very effectively (research) which is thought to play a major role in the manifestation of cancer. Common candida overgrowth symptoms include bad breath (halitosis), chronic fatigue, bloating, irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, severe seasonal allergies, sensitivity to alcohol and products that come into contact with the skin such as deodorant and perfume.
. **This is why we use organic coconut oil as one of our ingredients in our toothpaste formula!! πŸ‘ .

UGLY by nature toothpaste review

Thank you for the amazing review @jelainegodwin!! πŸ™β€

Instagram Repost πŸ‘‰ @jelainegodwin So, I've only used my new toothpaste a few times so far, but I really like it. I'm left with a clean feeling that doesn't leave an artificially sweet aftertaste. Thanks to @ugly_by_nature for making a toothpaste that is #vegan #nonGMO #crueltyfree #glutenfree and #freeoffluoride. The fact there are also #noartificialcolors #noparabens #nopreservatives is amazing too! I'm still getting used to #nofoamingagents, but I like the change. I took a 'before' picture so I can see the difference over time. All the reviews say there's a major difference in just a couple weeks. #yayforhealthyteeth

A study published this year in Toxicology in Industrial Health demonstrated that exposure to high levels of fluoride can be harmful to the spatial learning and memory. Early studies have linked fluoride exposure to reduced IQ, increased risk for rare bone cancer in boys, and #dental and skeletal fluorosis.

The study showed that rats exposed to drinking water with 100 ppm of fluoride exhibited impairment in the spatial learning and memory deficits and those exposed to the same level of fluoride but also fed vitamin C and Ginkgo biloba in a dose of 100 mg/kg did not experience as much harmful effects of fluoride.

The study also showed that exposure to 0.5 ppm of fluoride in drinking water, which is the limit recommended by the World Health Organization, did not cause the adverse effects.
In the U.S., fluoridated drinking water contains 1.0 ppm of fluoride. This study did not test the effect of #fluoride at this level. Keep in mind that tooth pastes, mouth washes, tea and sea fish contain high levels of fluoride.

The study concluded that "chronic exposure to high levels of fluoride causes severe impairment in the spatial learning and #memory, these deficits can be ameliorated with the vitamin C and G. biloba." (David Liu)

Over 60 Texas water systems failed to warn consumers about the presence of dangerous levels of arsenic in the water. And, now, a FAN (Fluoride Action Network) investigation has documented a similarly widespread failure to warn consumers about the presence of toxic levels of fluoride.

FAN has discovered that children in Texas have been exposed to dangerous levels of fluoride in their drinking water, due to a systematic failure by local, state, and federal officials to enforce the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Many communities in Texas have long been plagued with elevated naturally occurring levels of fluoride in their drinking water, and the problem appears to be getting worse. The most obvious and visible consequence of consuming water with elevated fluoride is a condition called dental fluorosis, which is a staining and pitting of the tooth enamel caused by fluoride’s interference with the tooth forming cells. In its advanced forms, fluorosis can cause disfiguring brown and black staining, as well as pitting and crumbling of the enamel. This damage to the tooth’s enamel is permanent, and can be acutely embarrassing to the children who suffer from it, placing them at higher risk for behavioral disorders.

Dental fluorosis is the most obvious effect of fluoride exposure; but it is not the only risk. In fact, the same fluoride level in water that causes severe forms of dental fluorosis (>2 mg/L) has been repeatedly linked to other adverse effects, including reduced IQ scores, kidney damage, osteoarthritis, bone fragility, and thyroid hormone impairment.
